I got a B, I got a C or I got an A. Does it even matter? It’s essential that teachers and students are periodically informed about student progress.
It seems to me that the test scores matter more than they should not to mention the final tests. Teachers in general give students the final grade after correcting the final test. Is it really fair to do so? That particular day when you are having your final test can become the worst day of your life. What if you haven’t slept enough, your pet died, you got a blackout or you simply felt insecure? Teachers don’t seem to care about that. Many of them might think that an A-student should perform on an A-level all the time without any exceptions.
I SAY NO TO GRADES! Why? Now some of you might think that I’ve gone mad but in fact I haven’t, I do not consider grades to motivate students.
There are a lot of reasons. First of all I would like to mention how unfair the grading system is. Why do teachers tend to give B+ or B-? These kinds of grades are not needed. Either it is an A or a B. If a student always have participated and done all the test and assignments with the grades B+, why does the teacher give the student a B as the final grade? Instead of writing B+ it could have been A-.
Grades tend to reduce student’s interest in learning itself. I can relate to this, since I’ve got grades that I don’t deserve. Many times I’ve been performing on an A-level through a whole year, but there it is, the final test that blows it all up. What kind of grade do I get then? Well a B of course, a B that almost everyone can get, yes even those who haven’t participated in class at all.
One of the well-researched findings in the field of motivational psychology is that the more people are rewarded for doing something, the more they tend to lose interest in whatever they had to do to get the reward (Kohn, 1993).
Grades tend to reduce students’ preference for challenging tasks. In order to get good grades students may spend their time on doing an easier task rather than a hard one. Why should you waste your time on something that seems unachievable? There is no point, you could only get a lower grade and I’m sure you don’t want that.
Grades are not reliable or objective. What does the letters A ,B, C or D tell?
It doesn’t tell you what a student can do, what the student understands, neither what the student has done during a year nor what a student needs help with.
Why waste time grading things? Spend time on learning new things instead.
